Nigeria Prepares to Welcome Back Citizens from the US as Deportations Loom – NiDCOM Are Ready

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has assured the public of its preparedness to welcome Nigerians who may be deported from the United States amid the escalating crackdown on illegal immigration. This statement comes at a time when the U.S. government, particularly under former President Donald Trump’s administration, has ramped up efforts to address illegal immigration, resulting in increasing deportations of foreign nationals.

In a recent interview with Vanguard, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at NiDCOM, clarified the Nigerian government’s stance on the issue. Balogun pointed out that while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is mainly responsible for overseeing the welfare of deported citizens, NiDCOM is fully prepared to coordinate efforts in ensuring the smooth reintegration of affected Nigerians. He further disclosed that an inter-agency committee, composed of representatives from various federal bodies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), had been set up to handle potential cases of deportation and facilitate the return of Nigerian nationals.

Despite these preparations, Balogun emphasized that NiDCOM had not received any official notification regarding the deportation of Nigerians from the U.S. He acknowledged that while the U.S. immigration enforcement measures have been intensifying, particularly in the wake of the Trump administration’s focus on cracking down on illegal immigration, no specific details had emerged about Nigerians being processed for deportation at the time of the interview.

However, reports indicate that around 3,690 Nigerians are currently facing deportation in the U.S., with this group being part of the larger number of non-citizens impacted by the aggressive immigration policies. According to a document from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) obtained by Vanguard, as of November 24, 2024, there were 1,445,549 non-citizens under final removal orders from ICE. Nationals from Mexico and El Salvador topped the list, with 252,044 and 203,822 individuals facing deportation, respectively.

The crackdown has already led to hundreds of migrant arrests, with some individuals being deported on military aircraft. While the operation is in line with Trump’s pledge to pursue mass deportations, there are growing concerns that Nigerians, alongside other African immigrants, may be targeted in the coming weeks.

ICE, the agency responsible for safeguarding U.S. borders and enforcing immigration laws, has faced significant criticism from human rights groups for its tough stance on immigration. However, the Trump administration has defended its policies, arguing that they are necessary for national security.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government is committed to providing support for its citizens who may be deported. NiDCOM’s role in facilitating the reintegration of returning Nigerians is crucial, and the commission, along with other relevant agencies, is working diligently to ensure that deported citizens are given the necessary assistance to restart their lives in Nigeria. The government’s effort aims to make the reintegration process as smooth as possible, ensuring that deported Nigerians can once again become productive members of society.

In response to this crackdown, hundreds of migrants, including Nigerians, have been arrested, with some being deported on military aircraft. The operation, which aligns with Trump’s promise to aggressively pursue mass deportations, has raised concerns that Nigerians and other African immigrants could be targeted in the coming weeks.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is charged with safeguarding the nation’s borders and ensuring that non-citizens who violate immigration laws are removed. While the agency’s actions have received criticism from human rights groups, the Trump administration has continued to advocate for stringent measures to reduce illegal immigration, which it views as a threat to national security.

In the meantime, the Nigerian government has reiterated its commitment to providing support for deported citizens, ensuring they are properly reintegrated into society. The NiDCOM’s role in this process will be crucial, as it works in tandem with other federal agencies to offer assistance to those returning to Nigeria.
