Popular Nigerian singer and songwriter, Timi Dakolo, has opened up about how he met his wife, Busola Dakolo, and the challenges he faced in winning her heart. Known for his soulful hit “Iyawo Mi,” the singer shared their love story in a recent interview with Pulse, revealing a journey of persistence, patience, and resilience.
The Church Connection
Timi Dakolo recalled that he first met Busola in church, where their paths crossed under divine circumstances. Despite his initial interest, Busola wasn’t keen on a romantic relationship with him.
“I met my wife in the church. I went to her and asked her to be my date for a ball. She gave me her number but wasn’t picking up the phone when I called,” he said.
Determined not to give up, Dakolo frequently visited her area in hopes of seeing her again. One day, fate smiled on him when they met, and he discovered that her phone had been stolen, explaining why she hadn’t returned his calls.
Persistence That Paid Off
What began as a casual friendship soon blossomed into something deeper. However, Timi admitted that Busola initially tried to “friend-zone” him. Refusing to accept defeat, he went the extra mile to show his love and commitment.
“I started developing feelings for her and she wanted to friend-zone me, but I refused. I suffered to win her love,” Dakolo shared.
The singer recounted how he would drive her to and from work in his branded Picanto car, which he won during the inaugural season of Idols West Africa in 2007. While the car was a symbol of his success, Busola often felt embarrassed being picked up in it.
“She used to be embarrassed whenever I picked her up with the branded Picanto I won from Nigerian Idols. I said, ‘Okay, don’t worry. I will shock you. Don’t look down on me.’ And I did,” he added.
A Love Story That Stands the Test of Time
In 2012, Timi Dakolo and Busola tied the knot, beginning a new chapter in their love story. Today, the couple is happily married and proud parents of three beautiful children. Their journey exemplifies the power of persistence and the beauty of finding love in unexpected places.
