Sokoto accidental bombing: Military blames villagers as ex-gov, others demand probe

In a devastating turn of events, a Christmas Day airstrike in Sokoto has left the region reeling as the Nigerian military faces mounting scrutiny. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has placed blame on local villagers for allegedly harboring terrorists, further intensifying tensions in the wake of the attack. The strike, which was meant to target Lakurawa militants, mistakenly hit the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, killing at least 10 civilians and injuring many others.

As the region grapples with the aftermath, calls for justice have flooded in from key political figures, including Sokoto’s Governor Ahmed Aliyu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-governor Aminu Tambuwal. These leaders are demanding a thorough and impartial investigation into the tragedy, which they have described as an avoidable loss of innocent lives.

While the military has vowed to investigate the incident, General Musa has maintained that the villagers’ alleged ties to militants rendered them legitimate targets in the operation. This stance has sparked outrage, with critics questioning the ethics and precision of military actions, especially when civilians bear the brunt of such miscalculations.

Governor Aliyu, who visited the affected communities to assess the damage, announced a generous donation to the victims’ families while vowing to hold the military accountable. Meanwhile, both Atiku and Tambuwal condemned the airstrike, calling for greater care and responsibility in military operations to prevent further civilian casualties.

As the investigation unfolds, the Sokoto airstrike has reignited fierce debates on military accountability, the protection of civilian lives, and the ethics of warfare in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against terrorism.
