The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau MON, has assured Nigerians that the nation’s football teams are poised to deliver exceptional performances in 2025. Speaking on Monday, Gusau expressed optimism about the year ahead, emphasizing that the NFF is committed to adequately preparing all national teams for major tournaments.
Reflecting on 2024, Gusau hailed the Super Eagles’ recent victory over Ghana’s Black Galaxies, securing qualification for the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN). He stressed that Nigerian teams would no longer participate in tournaments merely to make up the numbers but to contend for top honors.
The era of Nigerian teams arriving at major championships just to participate is gone. Our objective is to ensure our teams strongly contend for honors, and that requires early and proper preparation, Gusau stated.
Efforts are underway to rebuild the squad that impressed at AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, aiming to secure a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket and perform strongly at AFCON in Morocco later in the year.
Ranked as Africa’s best women’s team in 2024, they will receive adequate preparation to reclaim the Women Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco. More friendly games will be organized to blend experienced and new players.
Both the Falconets and Flamingos will aim to excel in their respective FIFA World Cup qualifiers and tournaments, with hopes of the Flamingos clinching their first-ever U17 Women’s World Cup title.
Gusau highlighted the importance of strengthening grassroots football to maintain a steady pipeline of talent for national teams.
The NFF President also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the National Sports Commission and the private sector to support the federation’s goals and programs.
As 2025 approaches, Nigerian football fans have much to look forward to, with promises of exciting performances and renewed efforts to achieve glory on the global stage.
