The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly criticized the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) for engaging in what it called dubious disconnections and exploitative billing practices.

In a statement signed by the Council’s Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, on Monday, the NUJ accused JED of unfairly targeting prepaid meter users and forcing them back to the controversial estimated billing system.

According to Garba, the estimated billing system is riddled with irregularities, compelling customers to pay for electricity they never used, even during prolonged power outages. He also alleged that some JED officials deliberately harass and embarrass customers, including prepaid meter users, for personal gains.

These officials allegedly impose estimated bills on unsuspecting customers, creating unnecessary hardship, Garba stated.

To address these challenges, the NUJ urged the Bauchi State Government and its ministries to explore alternative power supply options, which would help reduce costs and avoid reliance on JED’s “outrageous” estimated bills.

The NUJ also called on JED management to Employ competent and well-trained staff with strong customer relations skills, Improve service delivery to rebuild public confidence in the company.

The union’s criticism highlights growing dissatisfaction with JED’s operations in the state, as many residents continue to endure unreliable power supply and unfair billing practices.
