Union Saint-Gilloise striker, Promise David, has opened up on his decision to represent Canada instead of Nigeria at the international level.
David, who was born in Canada to Nigerian parents, previously played for Nigeria’s U-23 team, making two appearances. Despite his ties to Nigeria, the talented forward has now applied to switch his international allegiance to Canada, where he hopes to continue his football journey on the global stage.
In an interview with The Athletic, David shared the emotional connection behind his choice, stating that his upbringing in Canada played a significant role in his decision.
“Canadian football raised me. So I feel like I owe it back to Canada to perform for them,” he explained.
David’s career has been on a steady rise. After a stint with FC Tulsa in the United States, he moved to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, where he has delivered impressive performances. So far this season, he has found the back of the net 13 times across all competitions, showcasing his scoring ability and earning attention from national team selectors.
His decision to represent Canada adds him to the growing list of footballers with Nigerian heritage opting to play for other nations. Canada, which continues to develop its football program, has recently attracted players with dual nationality as they prepare for major international competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.
While the Super Eagles of Nigeria remain one of Africa’s most prestigious teams, David’s switch highlights the increasing competition between nations to secure talents with dual eligibility.
