Former Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant has suggested that Mikel Arteta is losing faith in Raheem Sterling, claiming the England international is being overlooked in favor of younger talent at the Emirates.
Sterling, who joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, had hoped to rejuvenate his career after being sidelined by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. However, his stint under Arteta has been far from smooth, with the former Manchester City star struggling to secure regular playing time. To date, Sterling has started just two Premier League matches this season, raising questions about his role in Arteta’s plans.
Pennant, speaking to Instant Casino, highlighted Sterling’s diminishing presence on the pitch. It’s clear to me that Mikel Arteta doesn’t trust Raheem Sterling, Pennant said. Against Everton, they needed a spark to unlock their game, and yet he was left on the bench. He’s consistently being overlooked for younger players.
Acknowledging Sterling’s talent, Pennant pointed to the player’s age and recent performances as potential reasons for his limited appearances. There is a great player in there, of course, but he isn’t getting any younger. While I don’t think Arsenal will go as far as terminating his contract out of respect for his contributions in the Premier League, I doubt we’ll see him in an Arsenal shirt much longer.
