Tinubu Rejects Price Control as Solution to Hunger Crisis and Rising Food Costs

President Bola Tinubu has firmly rejected using price controls to address Nigeria’s food crisis. In his first media chat on Monday in Lagos, Tinubu emphasized that market forces of supply and demand are the most effective way to stabilize the economy. He said improving supply chains would solve the issue.

When asked about price control, the President replied, “I don’t believe in price control; I don’t.” He stressed that the solution lies in continuing to supply the market and allowing market forces to take control. “It will come to a stage where you can’t hold no more,” he stated, expressing confidence that the market would correct itself.

Tinubu’s comments come as food prices rise sharply, causing public unrest. Recently, palliative food distributions in Ibadan, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory led to deadly stampedes, claiming over 60 lives. These incidents underscore the severity of the food crisis, with many Nigerians struggling to afford basic essentials.

Despite these challenges, Tinubu remains confident in his approach. He believes price control would not address the root causes of the problem. Instead, he advocates for improving supply chains to meet demand. His strategy aims to let the market regulate itself, ensuring more stable food prices in the future.

The President’s position is clear: he trusts the market, not the government, to set prices. By increasing supply, he believes the crisis will gradually improve. However, many Nigerians are skeptical. They question whether this strategy will provide immediate relief to those suffering from high food costs.

As Nigeria continues to face rising inflation and food insecurity, Tinubu’s reliance on market-based solutions marks a significant shift in economic policy. It remains to be seen whether this approach will ease the burdens of the population or if additional measures will be needed.
