APC Chieftain Urges Tinubu to Launch Probe into National Grid Collapses

Frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national grid have sparked growing concerns among citizens and stakeholders, with Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene decisively.

In a strongly-worded statement issued in Osogbo on Sunday, Oyintiloye, a former state lawmaker and a member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), described the power grid failures as “worrisome,” revealing that Nigeria has experienced no fewer than 12 collapses in 2024 alone.

A Blow to Economic Growth

Highlighting the devastating impact of unreliable electricity on the nation’s economy, Oyintiloye lamented that businesses are bearing the brunt of these disruptions. “Electricity is the backbone of modern economies. When the grid collapses frequently, it directly stifles productivity, discourages investment, and frustrates small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), which are critical to our economic growth,” he stated.

He emphasized that Nigeria, endowed with abundant natural resources, should not be grappling with consistent power failures. “We have the human and material resources to sustain an efficient power grid. The persistent collapses are unacceptable and demand immediate attention from the highest office in the land,” Oyintiloye added.

Call for Presidential Action

Oyintiloye urged President Tinubu to prioritize a comprehensive investigation into the root causes of these power outages. He stressed that such a probe should uncover any cases of negligence, inefficiency, or deliberate sabotage within the power sector.

“For the grid to fail 12 times in one year indicates that something is seriously wrong. A presidential investigation will not only reveal the underlying issues but also pave the way for sustainable solutions,” he noted.

The APC chieftain also called for punitive measures against individuals or entities found culpable. “If sabotage is involved, the government must act decisively to hold those responsible accountable. This embarrassment to our nation must stop,” he said.

A Wake-Up Call for the Ministry of Power

Oyintiloye directed his concerns to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, urging him to intensify efforts to stabilize the grid. He stressed the need for stringent oversight of maintenance operations and the enforcement of accountability among personnel tasked with managing the grid.

“Nigerians are already burdened by high electricity tariffs. It is only fair that they receive value for their money. The Ministry of Power must rise to the occasion and deliver the results that citizens expect,” Oyintiloye remarked.

Restoring Confidence in Nigeria’s Power Sector

The frequent national grid failures have eroded public confidence in the power sector, raising questions about the government’s ability to deliver stable electricity. Analysts believe that addressing these issues is critical not only for economic recovery but also for improving the quality of life for millions of Nigerians.

Oyintiloye’s statement serves as a clarion call to the Tinubu administration, urging it to demonstrate strong leadership and deliver tangible solutions to one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.

What’s Next for Nigeria’s Power Sector?

As President Tinubu’s administration continues its reforms across various sectors, the spotlight remains on the power sector. Stakeholders are watching closely to see how the government tackles these grid collapses and ensures stable electricity for Nigeria’s 200 million citizens.

Will this be a turning point for the nation’s energy sector, or will the cycle of collapses and economic losses continue? Only time will tell, but Oyintiloye’s call for action has amplified the demand for urgent and lasting solutions.
