Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has officially launched the reconstruction of the Buguma-Abalama-Tema-Degema-Abonema road, a major infrastructure project that will benefit multiple communities in Rivers State. The flag-off ceremony, which took place last week, was attended by key stakeholders including the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the former Attorney General of Nigeria, Odein Ajumogobia.
Dr. Peer Lubasch, the Managing Director of Julius Berger, expressed gratitude to the Rivers State government for their continued support. He emphasized that the company shares the state’s commitment to progress and development, particularly in the areas of infrastructure. Lubasch assured that the project would adhere to the same high standards that Julius Berger is known for across Nigeria.
Governor Fubara, who also spoke at the event, expressed confidence in Julius Berger’s ability to deliver quality work within the stipulated 15-month timeline. He highlighted the importance of the road, noting that it would address long-standing issues of criminality along its current dilapidated sections and bring about significant economic benefits. The road, which spans 19.7 kilometers, will connect nine communities across Asari-Toru, Degema, and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas in the Kalabari Kingdom.
With a budget of N30.4 billion, the project marks a significant step in the state’s ongoing development initiatives. Governor Fubara reiterated his trust in Julius Berger, stating that the company’s track record of excellence has earned them the opportunity to take on this crucial project.
The road project was awarded to Julius Berger in August, and the first payment of N9.1 billion has already been made, demonstrating the state’s commitment despite financial challenges. The reconstruction is expected to boost regional connectivity, enhance security, and stimulate further development in the region.
During the event, Odein Ajumogobia reflected on the road’s historical significance, recalling the importance of the Abonema seaport in years past and stressing the vital role that transportation plays in economic progress. The project’s completion promises to revitalize the area, improving access and opening up new opportunities for growth and development.
Julius Berger’s leadership team, including Regional Manager Friedrich Wieser, Project Manager Drodowski Finn, and Project Coordinator Chief Sam Ngbor, was also present, reaffirming the company’s commitment to delivering a world-class road infrastructure project for Rivers State.
The successful completion of this road will pave the way for enhanced economic activities and an improved quality of life for the people of Kalabari Kingdom and surrounding communities.
