Tragic Cargo Ship Mishap in Philippines Claims One Life, Two Missing

A devastating cargo ship incident off the coast of the Philippines has left one crew member dead and two others still missing. The Philippine-flagged vessel, Jerlyn Kathness, was struck by large waves and sank in the San Bernardino Strait near the island of Samar on Monday.

Bryhl Amay, the commander of the Coast Guard station, confirmed that of the 15 crew members aboard, 11 were rescued by passing vessels throughout the night. After over 25 hours in the water, one additional crew member managed to swim to safety, reaching the small island of San Juan by Tuesday morning. Tragically, the body of another crew member was later recovered by fishermen near the island of Biri.

The Jerlyn Kathness had been transporting 24 tonnes of cement from Cebu to Samar when the disaster occurred. The search for the remaining two missing crew members is still ongoing. Details of the vessel, which was built in 1993, describe it as a 199-tonne general cargo ship.
