Court Sentences Two Men to Community Service for Causing Breach of Peace in Ogun

In a ruling that emphasizes the importance of maintaining public order, the Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State has sentenced two men, Isa Ajibose (25) and Emmanuel Lawrence (22), to one day of community service for obstructing traffic and demanding money from the public. The court’s decision on Monday came after the two men pleaded guilty to charges of causing a breach of peace in the Tollgate area of Ota on January 31, around 9:30 p.m.

Magistrate O. O. Fadairo, who presided over the case, imposed the sentence without an option of a fine, underscoring the seriousness of their actions. The convicts were found to have blocked the road, obstructing traffic, and soliciting money from passing individuals, behavior that the prosecutor, E. O. Adaraloye, argued could have led to a disturbance of public peace.

The prosecutor highlighted that the actions of Ajibose and Lawrence contravened sections 234 and 406 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006, which govern offenses relating to the breach of public peace and obstruction of traffic. These offenses, according to the prosecution, were committed in a manner likely to cause public disturbance and inconvenience.

While the court’s sentence reflects a commitment to rehabilitate the offenders, it also serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of disrupting public order. By sentencing the men to community service, the court aims to address their behavior while providing an opportunity for them to contribute positively to society.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in Ogun State to curb public disturbances and maintain order on the roads. It also serves as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar disruptive activities.
