The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect, John Gambo, in connection with the brutal killing of Ibrahim Matthew, a student of the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa (FPN), following a violent altercation.
According to a press release issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, the tragic incident occurred on February 6, 2025, around 2:00 a.m. at a lodge behind ECWA Peace College, Shagari Road, Nasarawa.
Nansel revealed that the police were alerted by a resident, Mercy Bassey, who reported a confrontation between two individuals in the lodge. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Ibrahim Matthew, an ND2 Computer Science student, lying in a pool of blood with fatal injuries.
The victim was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Nasarawa, where he was confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited in the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
“Following a swift investigation, the suspect, identified as John Gambo, an ND2 student from the Banking and Finance Department of the same institution, was arrested,” the police spokesperson stated.
During interrogation, Gambo confessed to the crime, admitting he attacked the victim with both an axe and a knife during the altercation. The police recovered both weapons from the suspect, which will serve as critical evidence in the case.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation and prosecution.
The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation, promising that justice will be served. CP Mohammed urged students and residents to remain calm, emphasizing that the law will take its full course.
