The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged its leaders and members across Nigeria to make necessary sacrifices to ensure the party’s continued growth, unity, and electoral success. The call comes as the party prepares for its 2025 South-South Zonal Congresses, which will play a crucial role in shaping the PDP’s future in the region.
This appeal was made by the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the PDP in Cross River State during its Tuesday meeting, where key party stakeholders discussed the upcoming congresses and the party’s direction in the South-South region.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, signed by acting State Chairman, Hon. Denis Nkiri, along with 31 members of the SEC, the party leadership emphasized the need for unity, cooperation, and selflessness among members. They stressed that internal democracy and the selection of credible party leaders would determine the PDP’s chances of success in future elections.
“The forthcoming South-South Zonal Congresses will be a defining moment for our party’s future in the region. To ensure victory, all members must put aside personal ambitions and work collectively for the greater good of the PDP. We urge every stakeholder to embrace compromise, fairness, and inclusivity in electing the right leaders who will drive the party forward.”
The Cross River PDP SEC also declared its full support for the South-South Governors’ Forum, emphasizing that the state’s party leadership would align with the forum’s decisions regarding the 2025 Zonal Congresses.
Furthermore, the committee firmly rejected any plans to hold the PDP Zonal Congress in Calabar, stating that it disassociates itself from any purported congresses being planned outside the agreed framework of the party leadership.
The call for sacrifices and unity comes at a time when the PDP is working to consolidate its support base, especially in the South-South region, where the party has historically enjoyed strong backing. The leadership transition process at the upcoming congresses is expected to be highly competitive, and the PDP in Cross River is urging members to ensure that credible and competent individuals emerge from the process.
The communiqué also emphasized inclusivity, stating that the party must accommodate diverse views, interests, and aspirations to maintain its relevance and competitive edge.
“We cannot afford division at this critical time. The PDP remains the most viable alternative for good governance in Nigeria, and we must demonstrate that through our internal processes and unity of purpose.”
With the 2025 elections drawing closer, the PDP is positioning itself as a formidable opposition force in Nigeria. The party’s success in the South-South Zonal Congresses will likely have a significant impact on its political strength in the region and beyond.
As the party prepares for these crucial congresses, members are being urged to prioritize the party’s collective interests, foster internal unity, and work towards electoral victories at the state and national levels.
