Court Orders Remand of Four Terrorism Suspects Linked to Bello Turji in Kuje Prison

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of four terrorism suspects in Kuje Correctional Centre following their arraignment on 11 counts of terrorism-related charges. The suspects, including Musa Muhammad Kamarawa, Abubakar Hashimu (also known as Doctor), Samuel Chinedu, and Lucky Chukwuma, were charged for their alleged involvement with notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji and other terror groups.

Justice Emeka Nwite, delivering a brief ruling on Monday, directed that the suspects be held in detention while their trial continues. The four defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include conspiring to commit terrorism and providing material support to terrorist groups. The trial for the remaining four co-defendants, who are at large, was also mentioned. The case was adjourned to February 10 for further hearing.

The charges against the suspects span from 2018 to 2022 and include serious allegations of supplying illicit drugs, military uniforms, and other materials to terrorist camps in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kaduna States. Additionally, they are accused of aiding in the acquisition of a military gun truck, which was allegedly used in terrorist operations.

During the proceedings, the court addressed a preliminary objection raised by the defense regarding the territorial jurisdiction of the court, but it was ruled not ripe for hearing at this time. Despite this, the charges were read to the defendants, with the court taking measures to accommodate language barriers by reading the charges in both English and Hausa.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to tackle terrorism and prosecute individuals connected to terrorist activities, with the Federal Government intensifying its crackdown on terror financing and support networks. The court proceedings continue to unfold as the nation awaits further developments in this high-profile terrorism case.
