EFCC Operatives Take Over Court as Yahaya Bello’s N80 Billion Fraud Trial Resumes

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have taken over security at the Federal High Court in Abuja as the trial of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, on alleged fraud charges resumes today.

Heavily armed EFCC officers blocked one of the major roads leading to the court complex with their operational vehicles, creating a tense atmosphere. In addition to firearms, the operatives deployed security dogs and other tactical equipment at the court entrance. Officers in uniforms marked with the “EFCC” insignia thoroughly searched lawyers, litigants, and others attempting to access the premises.

The increased security measures caused discomfort among legal practitioners and court visitors. Some lawyers, who claimed they had no involvement in Bello’s case, openly expressed frustration over the strict checks. Litigants also protested, describing the security measures as intimidating and unnecessary.

The situation at the court gate became chaotic as individuals with unrelated cases were denied entry. Many voiced their displeasure, arguing that they were being unfairly treated despite having no connection to Bello’s trial.

Yahaya Bello is facing 19 charges of money laundering and financial misconduct amounting to N80 billion. On December 13, 2024, the court granted him bail set at N500 million, with two sureties in the same amount. Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, the EFCC continues to push for his prosecution.

The trial features prominent legal figures, with Bello’s defense led by Joseph Daudu, SAN, while the EFCC’s legal team is headed by Kemi Pinheiro, SAN. Justice Emeka Nwite is presiding over the case, which has drawn significant public and media attention.

As the trial resumes, the EFCC’s heavy security presence suggests heightened anticipation of key developments in this closely watched legal battle.
