In a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, working with the Imo State Command, have successfully neutralized three notorious terrorist kingpins tied to the Eastern Security Network (ESN), an armed wing of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This operation, carried out on January 24, 2025, marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against criminal elements in the southeastern region.
Following weeks of meticulous intelligence gathering, the police tactical unit launched a precise operation targeting the hideouts of these dangerous operatives. Acting on credible information, the team located a well-guarded terrorist base deep within the dense forests of Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area. As the police approached, they came under intense gunfire from the armed terrorists, sparking a fierce exchange that led to the neutralization of six group members. Among them were three notorious kingpins—Ifanyi Anayo, also known as Zuma De Rock; Chukwuemeka Odionyenfe, also known as Nmimi; and Kingsley Sunday—leaders responsible for orchestrating some of the most violent acts in the region.
The operation yielded a significant cache of weapons and materials, including five AK-47 rifles, over 500 rounds of live ammunition, and a stockpile of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Police also recovered various communication equipment and eight operational motorcycles, which were used by the group in their attacks and illicit activities.
These terrorists were known to be behind numerous high-profile crimes, casting a long shadow of violence over the region. Their criminal exploits include the brazen attack on the Owerri Correctional Center in 2021, where dozens of prisoners were freed. In addition, they were responsible for the ruthless killings of five policemen in Umunna, Okigwe, in 2022, and the arson of the Arondizuogu Police Station. The group has also been linked to multiple kidnappings, including the abduction of WAEC staff in 2023 and the capture of four Chinese nationals in December.
This decisive blow to the ESN network is a testament to the dedication and effectiveness of Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies in dismantling terrorism. As investigations continue, authorities are optimistic that this operation will disrupt the activities of ESN and bring much-needed security to the people of Imo State and beyond.
