Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to revive Nigeria’s economy, acknowledging the challenging economic conditions that the president inherited upon assuming office in May 2023. Speaking during his constituency briefing and empowerment program in Ikot Ekpene, Akpabio emphasized that President Tinubu has shown a determined resolve to fix the economy and improve the lives of Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or party affiliations.
Akpabio reflected on the dire state of the country’s economy, describing it as being on “life support” when Tinubu took office. He urged Nigerians to give the president time to work through the challenges, citing Tinubu’s successful economic transformation of Lagos as evidence of his capability to achieve similar results on a national scale. Akpabio assured Nigerians that under Tinubu’s leadership, the country would eventually see positive change.
The Senate President also highlighted the president’s commitment to regional development, noting the establishment of regional commissions aimed at empowering communities across the nation. He pointed to the appointment of a South-East minister for works and the signing of the South-East Development Commission bill into law as proof of the administration’s focus on addressing regional concerns, such as ecological challenges and poor infrastructure.
During the empowerment program, Akpabio distributed a wide range of items including bags of rice, cars, tractors, sewing machines, and scholarships to undergraduates, underscoring the support of President Tinubu in recognizing the people’s contributions to his electoral success. Additionally, Akpabio commended Governor Umo Eno for his peaceful approach and support, which included sending 1,000 bags of rice to APC supporters in Akwa Ibom.
