The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced its intention to engage the Federal Government for a salary review in 2025. In its New Year message, the NLC emphasized the need for a renewed focus on workers’ welfare, urging the government to adhere to the provisions of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and to implement policies that benefit citizens across various sectors.
In the statement, signed by NLC president Joe Ajaero, the union expressed concern about the recent economic challenges facing Nigerians but encouraged hope and perseverance. The NLC stressed the importance of governance that translates into tangible benefits for the people, including access to food, healthcare, quality housing, education, transportation, and security.
The union also called for the withdrawal of the Federal Government’s current Tax Bill before the National Assembly, advocating for greater stakeholder involvement in the process to ensure the tax system aligns with national development goals. Ajaero highlighted the need for transparency, honesty, and inclusivity in government policies to foster social dialogue and greater ownership of governmental decisions.
Looking ahead to 2025, the NLC reiterated its commitment to industrial peace, calling for respect for agreements with trade unions and a cessation of violence in labor relations. The NLC emphasized that it remains a key partner in Nigeria’s development, advocating for policies that improve the welfare of workers while ensuring the nation thrives.
Additionally, the NLC pointed out that given the current economic realities, it would be engaging the government for a wage review to ensure workers’ incomes can meet their basic needs and contribute more effectively to national productivity.
