Biafra Group Appeals to President Tinubu for Recognition, Outlines Vision for Sovereignty and Global Relations

The Simon Ekpa-led United States of Biafra (USB) has formally written to Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, seeking recognition of its newly declared sovereignty. The letter, which was signed by Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, the Acting Head of State and Deputy Prime Minister of the USB, was released on social media on Monday.

In the open letter, the Biafran group claims that the redeclaration of Biafra’s sovereignty took place in Finland on November 29, 2024. The event was marked by a convention attended by over 50 million Biafrans from around the world, where the decision to restore the nation’s 1967 independence was formally proclaimed. The newly declared state has also adopted the name “United States of Biafra,” and, according to Orabueze, it now comprises 40 states.

The letter asserts that a referendum held between February and November 2024 played a crucial role in this process, with millions voting both electronically and physically. The referendum, described as a substantial exercise in self-determination, is said to have solidified the desire of the Biafran people to restore their independence.

Drawing on the United Nations’ 1933 Montevideo Convention on the Rights and Duties of States, the letter outlines the criteria for statehood, including population, government, the ability to engage in foreign relations, control over territory, and respect for human rights. Orabueze strongly claims that Biafra meets all these criteria, and she emphasizes the right to self-defense and the ability to organize its services and legislate for its interests.

In the letter, the USB urges the Nigerian government to acknowledge Biafra’s sovereignty, suggesting that this could lead to peaceful and productive dialogue. The group advocates for a peaceful dissolution between Nigeria and Biafra, emphasizing the need for mutual respect for territorial sovereignty and the well-being of both countries’ citizens. The USB has also called for diplomatic relations with Nigeria and other countries, hoping to establish connections that will benefit both nations and foster economic growth.

The letter also highlights the USB’s commitment to developing a transparent, corruption-free governance framework, while striving to create an environment conducive to investment, innovation, and job creation. With strategic resources and a skilled workforce, the group envisions a prosperous and thriving Biafra, aiming to become a hub for trade and industry.

The United States of Biafra already has recognition from several United Nations member states, including Gabon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Zambia. The USB continues to seek Nigeria’s acknowledgment and hopes to foster peaceful and beneficial relations moving forward.

This bold letter reflects the growing resolve of the Biafran group to assert its independence and navigate the complexities of international recognition and diplomacy, as it steps forward with aspirations for a future shaped by self-determination and sustainable prosperity.
