Fear and tension have gripped Yan Shuni community in Katsina State after a group of heavily armed bandits stormed the area late Sunday night, injuring one resident, kidnapping several others, and making away with a large number of cattle and livestock.
The brazen attack, which lasted for several hours, threw the community into chaos as residents fled for safety. Gunshots echoed through the night as the assailants moved from house to house, forcefully taking people away and carting off livestock.
A security analyst, Bakatsine, confirmed the incident in a post on his official X handle on Monday. “Bandits attacked Yan Shuni community last night, wounding one person, kidnapping several individuals, and rustling a large number of cattle and livestock,” he wrote.
The exact number of abducted persons remains unknown as of press time, but sources within the community fear that the number could be significant. Witnesses recounted harrowing experiences of the attack, stating that the bandits operated freely without resistance, leaving behind a trail of destruction and panic.
Yan Shuni, like many other rural communities in Katsina, has been a frequent target of armed groups who engage in kidnapping for ransom and cattle rustling. Despite repeated calls for increased security presence in the area, residents say the attacks have continued unabated, leaving many feeling abandoned and vulnerable.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the latest assault, but security operatives are expected to launch an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, locals have urged the government to take urgent action to curb the rising wave of banditry, which has devastated livelihoods and forced many to flee their ancestral homes.
As anxiety grows, the attack in Yan Shuni adds to the long list of security challenges facing Katsina State and the broader northwest region of Nigeria, where criminal gangs continue to wreak havoc on communities with little resistance.
