Nigeria Partners with Switzerland to Drive Economic Innovation and Secure Prosperity for Future Generations

Nigeria is taking bold steps to reshape its economic landscape through a transformative partnership with Switzerland. On Monday, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, emphasized the nation’s readiness to collaborate with the Swiss European Free Trade Association (EFTA) during their courtesy visit to the National Assembly.

Akpabio highlighted Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy and a key member of the African Continental Free Trade Area, stressing the potential for partnerships that extend beyond trade. “We envision collaborations that will ignite innovation, diversify our economy, and create opportunities for generations to come,” Akpabio said.

Drawing attention to Switzerland’s legacy as a hub of innovation and resilience, Akpabio noted that the European Free Trade Association serves as a beacon of progress in advancing free trade and economic cooperation. He underscored the historical ties between the two nations, citing the 2017 agreement where Switzerland returned $321 million in recovered funds to Nigeria as a testament to their shared commitment to integrity and justice.

Akpabio lauded this partnership as a pivotal example of mutual trust and global accountability. He urged both nations to seize the moment to deepen economic ties and write a new chapter in their shared history.

Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria is undergoing bold economic reforms. These include the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the naira exchange rate, laying the groundwork for sustainable growth. Projections indicate a promising GDP growth rate of 4.17% by 2025, a testament to the nation’s transformative journey.

Thomas Aeschi, head of the Swiss delegation and a member of Switzerland’s House of Representatives, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential. He described the country as an indispensable partner for Switzerland in West Africa and reiterated EFTA’s commitment to fostering economic cooperation.

Aeschi also emphasized the delegation’s mission to explore new opportunities for collaboration. “The potential of this country is immense, just looking at its population size. Parliamentary diplomacy can strengthen ties and open doors for our governments,” he said.

EFTA, which comprises Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, is dedicated to advancing free trade and economic partnerships beyond the European Union. While formal trade negotiations with Nigeria are yet to begin, Aeschi stressed that the delegation’s visit is laying the groundwork for future collaborations.

The visit marks a significant step in Nigeria’s quest for global partnerships that transcend traditional trade agreements. With innovation, accountability, and mutual respect at the forefront, this collaboration with Switzerland promises to unlock economic opportunities and secure prosperity for generations to come.
