NIMC Clears FIC for Identification Exercise

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has granted approval to FIC Professionals Network Plc to participate in the World Bank-supported Identity for Development (ID4D) Ecosystem Enrolment Service in Nigeria.

This was revealed in a statement signed by FIC’s Executive Director, Segun Shonubi, on Thursday. The ID4D Project is designed to establish secure and verifiable digital identities for all Nigerians, aiming to improve service delivery, strengthen governance, and boost opportunities within the digital economy.

According to Shonubi, FIC’s approval followed the organization’s fulfillment of specific criteria required by NIMC. He highlighted FIC’s role as a stakeholder-owned organization actively involved in financial inclusion, having recently partnered with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria to launch the Agency Banking Certification program. This program targets individuals aspiring to become financial inclusion experts.

Shonubi noted, “The approval to participate was conveyed through a letter dated January 23, 2025, signed on behalf of the DG/CEO of the Commission, Engr. (Mrs.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote. Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project represents a bold and ambitious initiative to establish a secure and verifiable digital identity for every Nigerian, thereby enhancing service delivery, improving governance, and unlocking opportunities for Nigerians in the digital economy.”

In June 2024, the World Bank provided $45.5 million to NIMC for the ID4D project. The disbursement has been made in several tranches since December 2021, with funding still ongoing. The project receives co-financing from the World Bank’s International Development Association, the French Agency for Development, and the European Investment Bank.
