In a wave of excitement sweeping across Ogun State, students under the banners of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) have applauded Governor Dapo Abiodun for the remarkable transformation of sporting facilities ahead of the highly anticipated National Sports Festival.
Speaking through a joint statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday, Francis Gabriel, Chairman of NANS Ogun, and Thomas Kehinde, National President of NAOSS, praised the state government for setting an exceptional standard with the extensive upgrades at the MKO Abiola International Stadium and the Alake Sports Complex. They described the efforts as a clear demonstration of Ogun’s readiness to host a festival that would not only match but surpass expectations nationwide.
The students specifically highlighted the newly constructed swimming pool at the MKO Stadium, calling it a “world-class facility” that elevates Ogun State’s position as a serious contender for sporting excellence in Nigeria. They noted that while Ogun had successfully hosted the National Sports Festival back in 2006, the level of investment and attention to detail under Governor Abiodun’s leadership has raised the bar significantly for future hosts.
Beyond the infrastructural upgrades, the student bodies commended the strategic partnerships forged between the Ogun State government and private institutions like Babcock University and Remo Stars Football Club. They emphasized that such collaborations are critical to ensuring that the Gateway Games 2025 becomes a historic sporting event, one that will leave an indelible mark in the annals of Nigeria’s sports development.
Optimism continues to build as preparations intensify. Students believe that with the cutting-edge facilities already in place, Ogun is poised to deliver a National Sports Festival that will be remembered for decades as a defining moment for youth sports and athletic talent in the country.
In a passionate appeal, the student leaders called on Governor Abiodun to involve representatives from both NANS and NAOSS in the local organizing committee. They argued that including student leaders would foster a greater sense of ownership and participation among the youth, who form a significant part of the festival’s stakeholders.
They further urged the government to leverage the new facilities beyond the festival by instituting grassroots sports development programs aimed at discovering and nurturing fresh athletic talent across the state. According to the student bodies, this would not only sustain the legacy of the Gateway Games 2025 but also transform Ogun into a breeding ground for national and international sports champions.
As the countdown to Gateway Games 2025 begins, the applause from Ogun’s vibrant student community signals not just approval but a rising wave of anticipation for what promises to be one of the greatest celebrations of sportsmanship, unity, and youth empowerment in Nigeria’s history.
