Russia has declared that it seeks a long-term peace agreement over Ukraine, rather than a quick U.S.-backed ceasefire that could lead to renewed conflict.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov emphasized Moscow’s position, stating that a lasting solution must address what Russia considers the root causes of the war.

“We can recognize with sufficient confidence the desire of the American side to move towards a quick ceasefire,” Ryabkov said. However, he warned that such a move, without addressing deeper issues, would only result in a rapid return to hostilities and worsen Russian-American relations.

Ryabkov insisted that any agreement must include measures to resolve the underlying causes of the conflict. According to him, without such a framework, future clashes would be inevitable, bringing even more serious consequences.

The statement comes after recent Russia-U.S. talks held in Riyadh, where both sides reportedly agreed to work on restoring diplomatic ties and preparing for potential negotiations on Ukraine.

During the interview, Ryabkov also raised concerns about the treatment of Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine, an accusation Kyiv has repeatedly denied.

As tensions remain high, Russia’s stance suggests it will resist any short-term ceasefire plan that does not address its long-standing grievances, while the U.S. and its allies continue to push for an immediate halt to the fighting.
