SBM Intelligence: Nigeria Faces Billions in Lost Productivity Due to Infrastructure Deficiencies

Nigeria risks losing billions in productivity due to poor infrastructure, especially its road networks, warns SBM Intelligence. The report highlights key challenges, including bad roads, unreliable power supply, inadequate rail systems, and underdeveloped ports, all stalling economic growth.

The survey, Road to Nowhere: A Bumpy Ride Through Nigeria’s Roads, involved 245 drivers across major hubs. Potholes (32.9%) and security concerns (25.6%) were the top issues. Drivers said bad roads increase travel times beyond navigation predictions.

Traffic congestion peaks between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on interstate highways. While some routes like Bauchi to Kano have improved, many roads remain bad due to abandoned government projects and poor drainage.

Security is another major concern. 84.6% of respondents reported security incidents on their routes. Lagos, Maiduguri, and Port Harcourt are among the most dangerous hotspots. Port Harcourt is especially prone to kidnappings and theft.

The poor road conditions also increase vehicle maintenance costs. Nearly 49% of drivers reported higher expenses and shorter vehicle lifespans. This leads to higher transport prices for consumers.

SBM Intelligence calls for urgent investment in infrastructure. Improving roads would cut delays, lower costs, extend vehicle life, and stabilize transport prices. It would also reduce security risks and boost economic growth.

To address these issues, Nigeria needs substantial investment and effective policy action. Failing to act could worsen the country’s economic challenges and hinder its growth.
