Fourteen commuters narrowly escaped death on Thursday in a road crash involving a commercial bus and a private car along the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred at the Iyana-Oworonshoki axis of the bridge due to reckless speeding by the commercial bus driver.
According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the bus lost control and forcefully collided with a moving Toyota Yaris, resulting in multiple injuries.
“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to public safety by swiftly rescuing 14 accident victims following a devastating road crash at Ilaje, inward Iyana-Oworonshoki,” Taofiq said.
He noted that officers from LASTMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), quickly responded to the scene and rescued the victims, including the commercial bus driver. The injured were immediately taken to Gbagada General Hospital for treatment.
Reacting to the crash, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims and emphasized the importance of speed limit compliance among drivers.
He stated, “Both commercial and private motorists must comply with officially sanctioned speed limits to prevent unnecessary road accidents.”
The incident has once again raised concerns over reckless driving on Lagos roads, with authorities urging stricter adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
