In a concerning revelation, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has disclosed that more than 40% of Nigerian Army personnel are currently without adequate housing. This striking fact was brought to the fore during the commissioning of the newly constructed Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks in Asokoro, Abuja, on Thursday, where the General emphasized the critical housing shortage faced by military personnel.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede recalled that the accommodation crisis was one of the most pressing issues presented to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu upon his assumption of office. According to Oluyede, the army’s personnel housing gap has only worsened over time, with thousands of soldiers, including senior officers, still without proper accommodation across the nation’s capital, Abuja.
“The situation is dire,” Lt. Gen. Oluyede said, “More than 40% of the men and women of the Nigerian Army, who put their lives on the line to protect the nation, currently lack proper housing.” The newly commissioned barracks, which marks a significant step in addressing this issue, comprises the first two phases of a much larger housing initiative intended to accommodate the growing number of army personnel.
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks boasts a total of 614 housing units. Among these, 16 are designed for Major Generals, 17 for Brigadier Generals, and 30 units for the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers. Additionally, the barracks include family housing units, ensuring the accommodation needs of soldiers and their loved ones are met. The provision of three worship centres, sports facilities, and a powerhouse within the barracks adds to the overall well-being of the army’s personnel.
Oluyede acknowledged, however, that while the new barracks represent significant progress, they are only a small part of the broader solution. “This project, though commendable, is merely a drop in the ocean compared to the scale of the accommodation deficits the Nigerian Army faces, particularly in Abuja,” he remarked.
Despite the new developments, the Army continues to grapple with a growing housing crisis that affects its operational readiness. Lt. Gen. Oluyede called on the federal government, under the leadership of President Tinubu, to prioritize and expedite the completion of further housing phases and other welfare programs for the Nigerian Army, ensuring that every soldier, from the highest-ranking officer to the newest recruit, has access to the accommodation they deserve.
As the country grapples with increasing security challenges, the need to adequately house and care for the army personnel tasked with securing the nation has never been more urgent. The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Barracks, a promising step forward, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of those who serve. Yet, much work remains to be done.
