NNPC Reduces Petrol Pump Price to N860 as Fuel Costs Drop Across Nigeria

In a significant move that could ease the financial burden on millions of Nigerians, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has reduced the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, from N945 to N860 per litre. This adjustment comes shortly after the Dangote Petroleum Refinery lowered its ex-depot price, triggering a new wave of price cuts across the country.

For months, Nigerians have struggled with rising fuel costs, which have driven up the prices of transportation, goods, and services. Many have had to make tough choices, cutting down on essentials as fuel expenses eat deep into their incomes. The new price reduction by NNPC is now offering some relief, sparking hope that economic pressure may begin to ease.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which recently slashed its ex-depot price to N890 per litre, has been a key player in influencing the latest shift in fuel pricing. The refinery attributed its decision to favorable global market conditions, with crude oil prices witnessing a decline. This development has set the stage for a gradual reduction in fuel costs across the country, providing a much-needed break for businesses and households alike.

NNPC, which operates a vast network of filling stations across Nigeria, has quietly implemented the new price at some of its retail outlets, particularly in Lagos, where petrol is now selling at N860 per litre instead of the previous N945 per litre. While there has been no official statement from the company regarding the price adjustment, independent checks have confirmed the new rates at various locations. Many fuel stations under NNPC’s control have already updated their pumps, signaling a widespread transition to the new pricing.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria has also confirmed the change, stating that the move will bring relief to Nigerians who have been struggling with the high cost of fuel. The National Vice President of the association, Hammed Fashola, described the price adjustment as a welcome development, adding that although the new price has not yet been reflected on official online portals, work is ongoing to ensure that all platforms are updated accordingly.

The reduction in petrol prices is expected to have a ripple effect across the economy, leading to lower transportation costs and a potential drop in the prices of essential commodities. Many Nigerians are hopeful that this trend will continue, providing lasting relief from the economic challenges brought on by inflation and the high cost of living. The coming days will reveal whether this price cut is a temporary adjustment or a sign of more reductions to come.
