The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken a bold step towards modernizing its revenue collection system by approving a substantial N242.8 million for the procurement of a Microsoft 365 licence. This move, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), marks a significant shift towards digital transformation in Nigeria’s capital.
The approval was announced by the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Mr. Michael Ango, following a high-level meeting of the FCT Executive Committee, chaired by Minister Nyesom Wike, in Abuja. The decision aligns with the administration’s broader strategy to integrate advanced technology into governance, ensuring seamless operations, improved communication, and a more transparent tax system.
Mr. Ango emphasized that the investment in Microsoft 365 would enable the FCT-IRS to transition from traditional manual processes to a fully automated system. This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance workflow efficiency, internal collaboration, and data management within the agency. He further stated that the licence would facilitate the secure storage of essential documents in the cloud, reducing reliance on physical paperwork and minimizing errors associated with manual record-keeping.
“This is one of the many strategic investments in technology that the FCT is undertaking to optimize revenue generation and streamline administrative processes,” Ango explained. “The adoption of Microsoft 365 will enhance our ability to communicate seamlessly within our offices, automate our core functions, and ultimately improve service delivery to taxpayers.”
The FCTA’s move to digitize revenue operations comes at a time when the Nigerian government is intensifying efforts to boost internally generated revenue (IGR) to fund critical infrastructure projects and public services. By leveraging cloud-based solutions, the FCT-IRS is expected to improve tax collection processes, enhance compliance monitoring, and provide better data security, ensuring that revenue leaks are minimized.
Minister Nyesom Wike’s administration has been vocal about the need for innovation and efficiency in governance. The approval of this digital infrastructure reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to drive economic growth and improve service delivery across all sectors.
With Nigeria’s rapid digital evolution, experts have long advocated for government institutions to adopt modern tools that will enhance operational efficiency. The integration of Microsoft 365 into the FCT-IRS’s system is expected to set a precedent for other government agencies seeking to optimize their functions through technology.
As the FCTA continues its efforts to modernize its revenue service, all eyes will be on the impact of this initiative on tax collection, operational efficiency, and service delivery to the residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
