A Chief Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, Oyo State, has ordered the remand of Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Fasasi Abdulahi, Principal of Bashorun Islamic High School, at the Agodi Correctional Facility.
The trio was arraigned on Tuesday, December 24, on a four-count charge, including conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities. The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi, issued the ruling pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice.
The charges stem from a tragic stampede at Bashorun Islamic High School that claimed the lives of 35 children and left six others injured. The heartbreaking incident has drawn widespread attention and calls for accountability.
Tension ran high at the court premises as supporters of Oriyomi Hamzat gathered to witness the proceedings. The situation nearly escalated when police vehicles began transporting the suspects away from the court, but a heavy security presence maintained order.
The ex-queen, Prophetess Silekunola, was hospitalized following the incident. She reportedly collapsed during interrogation at the Force Headquarters in Ibadan and was subsequently taken to the Police Hospital in Eleyele for treatment.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of eight individuals in connection with the stampede, including the three remanded suspects. Investigations are ongoing, and the court’s ruling reflects the gravity of the charges as authorities seek to determine culpability in the tragic event.
The case has sparked intense public scrutiny and renewed discussions on the importance of adequate safety measures at large public gatherings, especially events involving children.
