Olivia Hussey, the beloved actress who brought Juliet to life in Franco Zeffirelli’s acclaimed 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73.
Her family confirmed the news on Instagram, describing her as a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951, Hussey began her acting career early. At just 15 years old, she starred opposite Leonard Whiting in the Oscar-winning film, earning a Golden Globe for “New Star of the Year” and cementing her place in cinematic history.
Beyond Romeo and Juliet, Hussey showcased her versatility in films such as the cult classic Black Christmas (1974) and the star-studded adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile (1978).
In recent years, Hussey and Whiting garnered attention for their 2023 lawsuit against the studio behind Romeo and Juliet, alleging exploitation during the filming of a controversial nude scene. While the case was dismissed, Hussey maintained in a 2018 interview that the scene was handled professionally and with their awareness as young actors.
Hussey’s journey began in London, where she moved at the age of seven. The daughter of an Argentine opera singer and a British legal secretary, she honed her craft at the Italia Conti drama school, where her talent blossomed.
Hussey is survived by her husband, musician David Eisley, their three children, and a grandchild. Her unforgettable contributions to film and her lasting impact on fans around the world ensure her legacy will endure for generations.
