The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed the pivotal role of data in accelerating Nigeria’s transition to a sustainable digital economy. Speaking at the 2024 Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge, the agency emphasized that data sovereignty, security, and privacy are central to building a robust digital ecosystem that benefits both individuals and businesses across the country.
The event, which spotlighted innovative solutions from Nigerian tech entrepreneurs, also served as a platform to showcase NITDA’s ongoing efforts to nurture local talent, foster collaboration, and empower the next generation of digital leaders.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, the Director of the Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions Department, Mr. Oladejo Olawumi, described data as the currency of the digital economy. He stressed that the agency’s commitment to ensuring safe and responsible data utilization is critical for Nigeria’s future.
“The issue of having something homegrown is very important because data drives the digital economy. Everything we do today revolves around data, and safeguarding it ensures the sustainability of our digital growth,” he stated.
Inuwa noted that the Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge aligns with NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2.0, which aims to position Nigeria as a global leader in the digital economy. The agency envisions a technological landscape where innovation flourishes, creating opportunities for tech entrepreneurs to thrive.
The Role of the Nigeria Startup Act in Driving Innovation
One of the highlights of the event was a call to participants to leverage the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA), a key policy initiative designed to empower startups through funding, mentorship, and access to angel investors.
“The Nigeria Startup Act enables innovators to access the resources they need to transform their ideas into impactful solutions. This is a golden opportunity for entrepreneurs to turn their dreams into reality,” Inuwa remarked.
The NSA serves as a framework to create an enabling environment for startups while promoting collaboration between government, private sector players, and the tech ecosystem.

In a move to support indigenous innovation, NITDA announced plans to establish Innovation Nests in three states, with expansions to six more states by year-end. These state-of-the-art centers are designed to inspire creativity and foster collaboration among tech entrepreneurs, offering workspaces, leisure areas, and networking opportunities with global investors.
“These world-class facilities will serve as hubs for innovation, offering spaces to relax, collaborate, and attract international investment,” Inuwa explained.

The 2024 Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge, organized by NITDA’s Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), provided a platform for participants to showcase groundbreaking ideas that address critical challenges in the digital economy.
In her opening remarks, the National Coordinator of ONDI, Ms. Victoria Fabunmi, lauded the participants for their ingenuity and highlighted the importance of collaboration in strengthening Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.
“This event is designed to spotlight innovative ideas and foster collaboration among stakeholders in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. It aligns with NITDA’s strategic initiatives and the Ministry’s pillars of Knowledge, Innovation, and Policy,” she stated.
Fabunmi also noted that the participants had spent months identifying infrastructure gaps and opportunities to strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem, demonstrating the depth of talent within Nigeria’s tech community.
