Nigerian Slangs Go Global as Oxford Dictionary Adds ‘Japa,’ ‘Yahoo,’ and 18 Other Words

In a groundbreaking update that underscores the richness of Nigerian culture and language, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has officially added 20 Nigerian words and slangs to its vast collection. These words, drawn from Pidgin English, street slang, and the everyday lexicon of Nigerians, reflect the growing global appreciation for the country’s unique linguistic and cultural identity.

Among the newly added entries are terms like japa, agbero, eba, and 419. These words, deeply ingrained in Nigerian society, carry meanings that resonate with the daily experiences of millions. For instance, japa is used to describe the act of emigrating from Nigeria to seek better opportunities abroad, a phenomenon familiar to many Nigerians. On the other hand, agbero refers to the ubiquitous touts at bus stops who help organize passengers and collect fares.

The inclusion of these words highlights the versatility of Nigerian English. Words such as japa and jand have been added as both nouns and verbs, showcasing their flexibility in everyday conversations. The list also includes cultural staples like eba (a type of food made from cassava flour) and suya (a popular spicy meat skewer), further emphasizing the diverse elements of Nigerian life.

Kingsley Ugwuanyi, a Nigerian English consultant for the OED, expressed his excitement over the development. Taking to LinkedIn, he shared the pride he felt in contributing to this landmark achievement. “I’m thrilled to announce that the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has officially published its latest updates, featuring an amazing collection of Nigerian English words that beautifully reflect Nigeria’s culture, creativity, and the unique ways we express ourselves as Nigerians,” he wrote. Ugwuanyi also revealed that he provided the pronunciation guides for these words, allowing global audiences to engage with them authentically.

The recognition of Nigerian slang in the global linguistic landscape is a testament to the country’s influence and the increasing interest in its language. Words like 419, a term synonymous with internet fraud, and yahoo boy, used to describe individuals involved in such scams, reflect the darker sides of societal narratives while still contributing to the linguistic tapestry.

For Nigerians, this update goes beyond mere recognition. It validates the rich, expressive nature of their language and culture. The OED has ensured that the pronunciations of these words are accessible to non-Nigerians, allowing a broader audience to appreciate their meanings and nuances.

The full list of newly added words includes: 419, abi, adire, agbero, area boy, cross-carpet, cross-carpeting, eba, Edo, gele, jand, janded, japa, Kanuri, kobo, Naija, suya, Yahoo, yahoo boy, and yarn dust. Each entry carries the weight of its cultural significance, providing a window into the vibrant world of Nigerian expression.

This update marks a milestone for the global recognition of Nigerian English and its influence. As these words make their way into everyday use beyond Nigeria’s borders, they carry with them stories, histories, and the indomitable spirit of the Nigerian people.
