Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) has terminated the employment of a staff member accused of extorting a passenger at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The incident, which occurred last December, involved the alleged extortion of ₦100,000 from a traveler heading to South Africa. An internal investigation revealed that the staff member colluded with other airport workers to perpetrate the act.
A source within SAHCO confirmed the dismissal, stating, “The management acted swiftly. A panel was set up, and after thorough investigations, the staff was found guilty of the allegation. Based on the findings and in line with Nigeria’s labor laws, the management dismissed the employee immediately.”
The source emphasized that SAHCO, an internationally certified ground handling company, upholds strict standards of professionalism. “We invest in extensive training for our staff and expect them to comply with global best practices. This isolated incident does not define our workforce, many of whom consistently deliver excellent service,” the source added.
SAHCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Vanessa Uansohia, declined to confirm the dismissal but reiterated the company’s zero-tolerance policy for unethical conduct.
“We condemn acts of extortion, harassment, or misconduct. Such behavior is against our values and code of conduct. While this case is under investigation, we assure our clients of our commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards,” she said.
