FG Links Niger Explosion to Illegal Stockpiling of Explosives, Vows Justice for Victims

The Federal Government has officially attributed the deadly explosion in Sabon Pegi, located in Niger State’s Mashegu Local Government Area, to the illegal stockpiling of explosives by a local resident, Yushua Maikampala. The tragic incident, which resulted in the loss of three lives and the destruction of 40 homes, has prompted the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, to take swift action.

According to a statement released by Alake’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, the explosion was caused by Maikampala’s unauthorized accumulation of explosives, a direct violation of safety protocols. Preliminary investigations revealed that Maikampala had been purchasing and storing explosives and their accessories in a house in Sabon Pegi, which ultimately led to the catastrophic explosion.

The incident, which occurred around 7 am on Sunday, was sparked by an electrical spark that ignited the stored explosives, causing widespread destruction in the residential area. Local resident Ibrahim Mustapha confirmed that more than 40 individuals were affected by the explosion.

In response to the tragedy, Minister Alake expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families, calling the event avoidable due to the negligence surrounding the handling and illegal storage of explosives. He emphasized that the situation highlights the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations within the mining industry.

The minister dispatched officials from the Federal Mines Office to the blast site for an immediate on-the-ground assessment. Alake also directed the Mines Inspectorate Department to conduct a forensic analysis of soil samples from the explosion site, aiming to trace the source of the explosives involved. This analysis will help determine the next steps in addressing the incident and preventing similar occurrences.

Security agencies are actively pursuing Maikampala, and he will be apprehended to face legal action for his role in the disaster. The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring mining operators adhere to rigorous environmental and safety standards, reinforcing its stance on safeguarding communities from such avoidable tragedies.

The explosion in Sabon Pegi is not an isolated incident, as mining site explosions in 2024 led to the deaths of over 30 individuals, underscoring the ongoing risks within the sector.
