Tinubu Urges Regional Leaders and International Partners to Strengthen Efforts in Combating Insecurity in Lake Chad Basin

President Bola Tinubu has called on regional leaders and international partners to intensify their efforts to tackle the escalating security, social, and economic challenges plaguing the Lake Chad Basin. The region, which spans across four countries—Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad—has long been a hotspot for violent extremism, intercommunal conflict, and displacement, exacerbating the already fragile conditions in the area.

During a high-level meeting at the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, held in Maiduguri, Borno State, President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, underscored the critical need for stronger regional collaboration and renewed commitment to restoring peace and stability. Addressing the forum, Tinubu emphasized that long-term peace in the region would only be achievable through sustained cooperation between the involved countries, effective governance, and strategic investments in the development of local communities.

“The Lake Chad Basin is at a crossroads,” Tinubu stated. “The stability of this region is paramount not only to the countries that share its borders but to Africa and the world at large.” His words highlighted the broader global importance of stabilizing the region, which has witnessed the displacement of millions due to violence and ongoing insurgencies, particularly from groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province).

The president stressed that addressing the underlying causes of the conflict in the Lake Chad Basin should be at the forefront of international and regional efforts. He called for a comprehensive, people-centered approach that prioritizes rebuilding the livelihoods of affected communities, particularly focusing on vulnerable populations such as youth and women. This approach, he said, would foster inclusive governance, ensuring that all segments of society benefit from peace-building and development initiatives.

During the forum, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation, particularly in security matters. The four countries that border the Lake Chad Basin must work more closely together, he argued, to dismantle insurgent networks and combat the growing threat of terrorism. Tinubu called for the establishment of more robust communication and coordination mechanisms between security forces from the different nations, in addition to creating a collective strategy to address the economic and social fallout of the conflict.

The president also appealed to the international community for greater support. He emphasized the critical role that multilateral organizations such as the United Nations, African Union, and the European Union play in supporting efforts to stabilize the Lake Chad region. Private sector involvement, he noted, could bring vital investment in infrastructure and job creation, while civil society groups have an essential role in facilitating peace dialogues and supporting reconciliation efforts at the grassroots level.

In his remarks, Vice President Shettima echoed the president’s sentiments, reiterating the need for a collective commitment to addressing both the immediate security threats and the long-term developmental challenges facing the region. He called for a comprehensive framework that would incorporate both military and non-military strategies, focusing on education, economic opportunities, and good governance as the pillars of a sustainable peace process.

The Lake Chad Basin region has long been a source of concern for regional leaders and international partners due to the multi-dimensional security threats it faces. The rising levels of extremism, banditry, and organized crime have not only devastated local communities but have also hindered economic growth and stunted social development. The calls made by President Tinubu during the forum are seen as part of a larger effort to galvanize both local and international actors to take a more proactive stance in addressing the region’s complex challenges.

The Lake Chad Basin region is of immense geopolitical and environmental importance, as it provides vital water resources for millions of people across the four countries. The depletion of water resources, combined with climate change, population growth, and cross-border violence, has exacerbated tensions in the region, further complicating efforts to bring about meaningful peace. However, with stronger regional commitment, international support, and targeted investments, there remains hope for lasting solutions to the crises afflicting the area.

As President Tinubu and other regional leaders continue to engage in efforts to stabilize the Lake Chad Basin, the focus on youth, women, and grassroots development is likely to play a key role in shaping the future of the region. The success of these efforts will depend not only on security reforms but also on creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and promoting a culture of peace and cooperation across the borders of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria.
