Niger State Government Cracks Down on Illegal Mining, Arrests 33 Suspects

The Niger State Government has intensified its efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the state, leading to the arrest of 33 suspects involved in unauthorized mineral extraction. The crackdown comes as part of a broader initiative to regulate the mining sector, curb environmental degradation, and prevent revenue loss to the government.

Officials from the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, conducted a series of raids in various locations where illegal mining operations were thriving. The suspects were caught engaging in unauthorized excavation and transportation of mineral resources without proper documentation. Authorities confirmed that mining equipment and extracted minerals were seized during the operation.

The state government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing mining regulations, stressing that illegal activities pose significant threats to the economy, security, and ecosystem. The Commissioner for Mineral Resources in Niger State emphasized that only licensed operators would be allowed to conduct mining activities, warning that further arrests would be made to dismantle unlawful operations.

Illegal mining has been a major challenge in several parts of Nigeria, leading to environmental damage, loss of government revenue, and security concerns due to the involvement of unregulated groups. The latest arrests in Niger State highlight the government’s determination to restore order and ensure that mineral resources are exploited responsibly and in compliance with legal requirements.

The suspects will be prosecuted according to the laws governing mineral resource management in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the government has urged communities to report suspicious mining activities and cooperate in its bid to sanitize the sector for the benefit of the state and its residents.
