Nigerian rapper and activist Michael Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman, has opened up about his personal life, revealing why he is yet to become a husband or a father.
Speaking on the TVC programme Your View, the 51-year-old disclosed that he made a vow during his younger years never to have a child outside marriage. Despite his age, he has held firmly to this decision, although he sometimes questions whether it was the right choice.
“I am not married and do not have a child yet. When I was much younger, I vowed never to have a child out of wedlock. Sometimes, I wonder whether I made the right or wrong decision. But still, it takes a lot from both parties. You have to do it with someone you really love,” he said.
Ruggedman also reflected on past relationships that did not work out. He recalled a particular situation where he was set to marry a woman, but their relationship ended when a wealthier man came into the picture, and her mother influenced their separation.
“I have met some ladies I thought I would end up with, but it didn’t work out. There was a particular lady I was supposed to marry, but a wealthy man came into the picture, and her mother separated us,” he added.
Despite societal pressure, Ruggedman shared in a 2021 interview that his mother and other family members have not pressured him to get married. He emphasized that he would settle down when he feels ready.
Ruggedman, known for his contributions to Nigeria’s hip-hop scene and his advocacy work, continues to focus on his career while maintaining his personal values regarding family and relationships.
