Residents of the Ovom Street area in Aba, Abia State, who were forced to flee their homes due to devastating gully erosion, are now expressing optimism about returning. The erosion, which swallowed several houses and trees, left the residents, including natives and business owners, in fear for their lives.
The displaced individuals relocated to villages in Obingwa LGA, but many are now hopeful as the Abia State government takes action to reclaim the affected area. These residents, who had once been abandoned by previous administrations, are now praising the current government’s efforts to address the erosion issue.
According to some residents, including Okoro Anagha and Isong Mathew, the government’s intervention brings a renewed sense of hope. They pointed out that under the previous administration, the gully continued to widen and deepen, leaving them with no choice but to leave their homes and businesses. However, with the ongoing reclamation work, they expressed their willingness to return to their former residences and business premises once the area is deemed safe.
While their journey back may still take time, these residents remain hopeful that the Abia State government’s commitment will restore their homes and livelihoods.
