The Fajesinmi Royal Family of the Bilaro Olu-Odo Ruling House has raised concerns over what they consider the rushed appointment and presentation of the Staff of Office to Oba Adesuyi Haastrup as the new Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland. The family claims that the swift process undermines the deep-rooted customs and traditions of Ijesaland and Yorubaland, accusing Governor Ademola Adeleke of disregarding cultural norms in his actions.
Oba Haastrup was selected by the kingmakers on Friday, and just under 72 hours later, his appointment was confirmed by the governor, with the Staff of Office being presented to him. However, the Fajesinmi Royal Family believes this fast-tracked process contradicts traditional practices, which they argue involve spiritual rites, consultation with the Ifa oracle, and the purification process known as seclusion.
Prince Olufemi Fajemisin, speaking on behalf of the family, emphasized that the ascension of a monarch in Yorubaland is a sacred and spiritual journey, one that is essential for establishing the legitimacy and authority of the new monarch. He stated:
By bypassing this time-honoured practice, the cultural essence of Yoruba kingship is eroded, and its sacred foundation is undermined. This rushed selection, approval, and presentation of the Staff of Office have raised significant concerns and sparked widespread disapproval.
The statement further emphasized that the traditional installation process involves preparing the king-elect for the weighty responsibilities of leadership, ensuring alignment with ancestral and divine orders. Disregarding this time-tested ritual, the royal family argues, diminishes the spiritual significance of the kingship role and undermines the monarchy’s connection with the people and the divine.
