Amaju Pinnick Fails to Retain FIFA Council Seat as Africa’s Football Leadership Takes a New Turn

The world of African football governance witnessed a seismic shift today as Amaju Melvin Pinnick, former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, lost his bid to retain his seat on the FIFA Council. The high-stakes election, held at the 14th Extraordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football in Cairo, Egypt, saw the Nigerian football administrator edged out by the slimmest of margins, marking the end of his tenure at the pinnacle of global football decision-making.

For Pinnick, this was more than just an election. It was a battle for influence, relevance, and continuity in the power corridors of international football. Having served on the FIFA Council since 2021, he had hoped to extend his stay and further cement his role in shaping the future of the game on the global stage. But the numbers did not fall in his favor.

African football delegates cast their ballots, determining who would represent the continent at FIFA’s highest governing body. Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa led the way with a commanding 49 votes, securing his position effortlessly. Former Egyptian Football Association president Hani Abou Rida and Niger’s Djibrilla Hima Hamidou followed closely, both earning 35 votes. Mauritanian FA president Ahmed Yahya made it through with 29 votes.

Then came the moment of heartbreak for Pinnick. The last available spot was fiercely contested, with Djibouti’s Souleiman Hassan Waberi edging him out by just a single vote. Waberi secured 29 votes, while Pinnick fell just short at 28. It was a devastating blow for the Nigerian, who had built a reputation as one of Africa’s most influential football administrators.

Several other high-profile candidates also failed to make the cut. Andrew Kamanga of Zambia received 19 votes, Guinea’s Yacine Diallo got 18, and Senegal’s Augustin Senghor managed only 13. Mathurin de Chacus of Benin withdrew before the final count.

The election was equally competitive on the women’s side. Comorian football official Kanizat Ibrahim emerged victorious with 30 votes, securing her place on the FIFA Council. Lydia Nsekera of Burundi and Sierra Leone’s Isha Johansen missed out, with 13 and 7 votes respectively.

Africa is allocated seven seats on the FIFA Council, with one automatically going to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) president. The remaining six seats are contested by top football administrators across the continent. Pinnick’s failure to secure re-election signifies a major shift in African football leadership, as newer figures take center stage in FIFA’s decision-making process.

For Nigeria, Pinnick’s exit leaves a gap in global football representation. His tenure saw him advocate for African football reforms and increased funding, but his influence in international football governance will now take a backseat. Whether he will attempt a comeback in the future remains to be seen.

As the dust settles in Cairo, the message is clear, African football is undergoing a transition, and only those with the right alliances, influence, and backing will remain in the game. For Pinnick, this chapter may have ended, but his legacy in football administration will not be forgotten.
