Australia is confronting a surge in espionage, foreign interference, and potential sabotage, with hostile actors intensifying efforts to infiltrate its defense and security networks, the country’s top intelligence official has warned.
Mike Burgess, Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), delivered a stark assessment in his annual threat briefing, revealing that multiple foreign governments are actively seeking classified information on Australia’s military capabilities.
“Defence personnel are being targeted in person and online. Some were recently given gifts by international counterparts,” Burgess disclosed. “The presents contained concealed surveillance devices.”
The intelligence chief cautioned that the AUKUS alliance—comprising Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom—remains a prime target for intelligence gathering, even from countries considered allies.
He further warned that some authoritarian regimes were becoming increasingly aggressive, disregarding conventional espionage norms.
“If the spy game has a rule book, it is being rewritten,” Burgess said. “If there are red lines, they are being blurred or deliberately rubbed out.”
ASIO has also uncovered multiple instances of foreign operatives attempting to harm individuals residing in Australia. Burgess cited a chilling case where a foreign intelligence service had plotted to lure a human rights activist to another country under false pretenses, with plans to stage a fatal “accident.”
“Fortunately, ASIO intervened to stop the travel and foil the plot before it occurred,” he said.
The intelligence revelations underscore growing security challenges as geopolitical tensions escalate. With espionage tactics becoming more sophisticated and emboldened, Australian authorities are ramping up counterintelligence efforts to safeguard national security.
