Aviation Authority Expresses Concern Over Rising Flight Cancellations

The acting Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Chris Najomo, has raised alarms over the growing number of flight cancellations. He revealed that 190 flights were canceled over just two months. This was shared during an engagement session with airlines on Friday.

Najomo highlighted that in September 2024, out of 5,291 flights, 2,434 were delayed and 79 canceled. In October, the situation worsened, with 5,513 flights operated, 2,791 delayed, and 111 canceled. While acknowledging that some disruptions are unavoidable, he stressed that poor management of these situations is not acceptable.

The NCAA boss reminded airlines of the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023. He emphasized that passenger rights during disruptions are mandatory, not optional.

Najomo also revealed that he had received calls from the presidency and National Assembly over the rising number of unruly passenger behaviors at airports. He condemned the incidents, calling them an embarrassment to the country. He vowed to take action to restore order.

He urged airlines to improve their management of disruptions. Najomo also plans to meet with the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to address the issue further.

The growing trend of passenger misconduct was also addressed by FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku. She emphasized the importance of clear communication and warned that unruly passengers could face legal consequences or be placed on a no-fly list.

As flight cancellations rise, the NCAA and other authorities are determined to take strong action. They aim to restore order and ensure better treatment for passengers.
