Battle for State Police Intensifies as Debate Over Security Reform Grows

Nigeria is moving toward decentralizing its security system. All 36 state governors now support the creation of state police. This shift aims to address the growing security crisis.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna confirmed that most governors back the idea. They believe local police will be better suited to tackle issues like banditry and kidnapping. Local officers understand their communities and the terrain.

The call for state police is a response to Nigeria’s ongoing security problems. In 2018, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo backed the idea, stating that local forces would improve security. At the time, the Senate proposed a bill for state police, but it did not pass.

President Bola Tinubu has long supported state police. His government sees it as essential for maintaining order. The need for local policing is now more urgent than ever due to increasing violence across the country.

However, there are concerns. Critics fear governors may misuse state police for political purposes. Lawmakers are working on measures to prevent abuse and ensure accountability. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu assured that a legal framework will be put in place to prevent this.

Lawmakers like Professor Paul Nnamchi agree on the need for state police but stress safeguards. He warned against past mistakes where local forces were politicized. Nnamchi emphasized the importance of transparency and oversight.

Recently, the House of Representatives passed a bill for the second reading, signaling progress. The bill still faces challenges, but momentum is building. The public is watching to see if it will become law.

The push for state police is gaining momentum. Its success depends on careful collaboration among lawmakers, governors, and the public. This change could reshape Nigeria’s security system.
