Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has expressed his deep sorrow and outrage over the brutal attack on Anwase community in Kwande Local Government Area, which occurred on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024. In the attack, herdsmen militias killed 11 innocent residents, injured several others, and set their homes on fire.
Governor Alia condemned the violence in the strongest terms, emphasizing that no such attacks on unarmed civilians would be tolerated. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor acknowledged the persistence of insecurity in the state despite his administration’s continued efforts to ensure the safety of the people. This tragedy, he said, is particularly painful as it occurred on a day meant for peace and joy.
Determined to bring justice to the victims, Governor Alia assured the people that the perpetrators would be held accountable. He made it clear that, despite the attackers’ apparent belief that they are anonymous, they will soon face the consequences of their actions. “The perpetrators may think they are unknown, but they will pay dearly for this,” Alia stated, reiterating his commitment to securing justice.
The governor also expressed heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones in the attack, offering his thoughts and prayers to those injured. He vowed to ensure that justice is swiftly served and that no violent act goes unpunished.
Looking ahead, Governor Alia reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to enhance security measures. He called on security forces to intensify their surveillance efforts and to ensure that vulnerable communities are adequately protected.
