Tension has gripped the Lagos State House of Assembly following the sudden withdrawal of police escorts attached to the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, raising concerns over her safety and the stability of the Assembly’s leadership.
Reports indicate that security personnel assigned to protect Meranda and those guarding the Assembly complex have been pulled out with immediate effect, leaving the Speaker without formal protection.
A source close to the Assembly confirmed the development to Tribune, saying, “As we speak, all security has been withdrawn from the Speaker, and she is now on her own.” The source further warned that the move has left Meranda “vulnerable and open to attack,” urging authorities to act swiftly to resolve the situation.
The unfolding crisis comes in the wake of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s reported return to the country, intensifying speculation about a power struggle. Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, while he was in the United States, with lawmakers accusing him of misconduct.
Despite his removal, Obasa has contested the impeachment, insisting that due process was not followed. In his absence, Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as the new Speaker with the backing of the influential Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC).
The withdrawal of Meranda’s security detail has fueled rumors of Obasa’s possible reinstatement, deepening the uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the Lagos Assembly.
As the situation unfolds, there are growing concerns about the implications for the state’s legislative stability and the safety of key figures involved in the power tussle.
