China has thrown its support behind the proposed negotiations between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Speaking on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun welcomed the development, emphasizing Beijing’s long-standing stance on diplomatic resolution.
“Russia and the U.S. are both influential powers, and China welcomes their efforts to strengthen communication and dialogue on a range of international issues,” Jiakun stated. He reiterated that China views negotiations as the only sustainable path to ending the conflict.
From the outset of the war, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a political solution, positioning Beijing as a mediator while maintaining close ties with Moscow.
The diplomatic push follows a phone call between Trump and Putin on Wednesday, during which both leaders reportedly agreed to begin formal talks aimed at ending Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
