Civil Society Group Pressures Nigerian Government to Tackle Alarming Insecurity and Power Sector Collapse

The Osun Masterminds, TOM, has raised an urgent alarm over Nigeria’s deepening security crisis and the worsening state of its power sector, calling for immediate government action to stem the decline.

Speaking during the April edition of the ‘State of the State’ address on Monday, TOM Executive Director, Professor Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, warned that Nigeria’s security situation has reached a frightening threshold where no part of the country can be deemed truly safe. His address painted a grim picture of a nation under siege by the growing threats of kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.

Professor Oyedokun-Alli expressed concern that what Nigeria faces now dangerously mirrors ethnic cleansing, as entire communities and tribes suffer devastating attacks. He criticized what he described as the government’s deafening silence and unresponsiveness to these atrocities, adding that citizens are increasingly being forced to resort to self-help measures in the absence of effective state protection.

He cautioned that unless urgent steps are taken, criminal elements would continue to gain ground, emboldened by the absence of strong and proactive security measures. The group issued a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to act decisively before the situation spirals even further out of control.

Calling for immediate reforms, Oyedokun-Alli stressed that Service Chiefs must be held strictly accountable for the deteriorating security landscape. According to him, decisive leadership is urgently needed to restore citizens’ confidence and safeguard the nation’s future.

Beyond the spiraling insecurity, TOM also spotlighted the worsening power supply across the country. Despite skyrocketing electricity tariffs, Nigerians who previously enjoyed steady power now grapple with barely three hours of electricity per day. Professor Oyedokun-Alli decried the sharp decline, lamenting the widening gap between the promises made to Nigerians and the daily realities they endure.

The group expressed particular disappointment with the Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, describing his recent public claims regarding the state of the nation’s power supply as misleading and unacceptable. Oyedokun-Alli criticized the government’s apparent focus on rhetoric rather than meaningful action, stressing that Nigerians deserve far better than empty assurances.

TOM warned that the worsening electricity crisis poses a major threat to the country’s socio-economic development, noting that no meaningful growth can occur without a stable and reliable power supply. Professor Oyedokun-Alli called on President Tinubu to urgently address the situation, emphasizing that restoring stable power is critical to revitalizing the economy and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians.

With rising insecurity and an energy sector in disarray, The Osun Masterminds emphasized that urgent, coordinated action is the only path forward to prevent the further unraveling of Nigeria’s social and economic fabric.
