A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 13 for the hearing of a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by singer Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Achakpo, against the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Egbetokun.
The suit follows Speed Darlington’s arrest in October 2024 after allegations of defamation and cyberstalking against award-winning artist Burna Boy. He was later released on bail but was re-arrested in November for allegedly jumping bail.
In his lawsuit, the singer seeks the court’s intervention to declare his arrest and detention as violations of his fundamental rights. He has also requested an order for his immediate release and N300 million in damages. His lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, requested an adjournment, stating that the I-G’s lawyer, Garba Audu, needed time to review the case.
Justice Musa Liman is set to hear the case, with the singer’s criminal arraignment scheduled for January 15. The court also advised the police to release Speed Darlington to his lawyer, pending the trial.
